The Ascension of the Lord

Welcome to this service celebrating the ascension of the Lord. The service uses the traditional order and the singers have enjoyed recording the beautiful chants that are sung only at this time of the liturgical year.

There are many wonderful images of the Ascension, including this one from our own reredos at St Mary Magalene’s Adelaide.

Acts 1,11
Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? Alleluia: in like manner as ye have seen him going up into heaven, so shall he come again, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
℣. Ps. 47, 1.
O clap your hands together, all ye people: O sing unto God with the voice of melody. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Kyrie, eleison. Christe, eleison. Kyrie, eleison.

℣. The Lord be with you.
℟. And with thy spirit.

℣. Let us pray.

Grant, we beseech thee, almighty God, that like as we do believe thy only-begotten Son our Lord Jesus Christ to have ascended into the heavens; so we may also in heart and mind thither ascend, and with him continually dwell: Through the same Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

The Lesson from the Acts of the Apostles.

The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen: To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God: And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me. For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.

When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

℟. Thanks be to God.

℣. The Lord be with you.
℟. And with thy spirit.

℣. The continuation of the holy Gospel according to Mark.
℟. Glory be to thee, O Lord.

At that time: Jesus appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen. And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God. And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following.

℟. Praise be to thee, O Christ.

Alleluia; Pauline reads from the gospel of Mark

℣. The Lord be with you.
℟. And with thy spirit.

℣. Let us pray.

Ps. 47, 1. God is gone up with a merry noise: and the Lord with the sound of the trumpet, alleluia.

Accept, O Lord, the gifts which, in remembrance of the glorious Ascension of thy Son, we offer unto thee: and mercifully grant; that we may be delivered from present dangers, and attain unto everlasting life. Through the same Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

℣. The Lord be with you.
℟. And with thy spirit.

℣. Lift up your hearts.
℟. We lift them up unto the Lord.

℣. Let us give thanks unto our Lord God.
℟. It is meet and right so to do.

Preface.

It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto thee, O Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God: Through thy most dearly beloved Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Who after his most glorious Resurrection manifestly appeared to all his Apostles, and in their sight ascended up into heaven to prepare a place for us, that where he is, thither we might also ascend, and reign with him in glory. Therefore with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious name, evermore praising thee, and saying:

Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of hosts, Heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Glory be to thee, O Lord most high. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

All glory be to thee, Almighty God, our heavenly Father, for that thou of thy tender mercy didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to suffer death upon the Cross for our redemption; who made there (by his one oblation of himself once offered) a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction for the sins of the whole world; and did institute, and in his Holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death until his coming again;

Hear us, O merciful Father, we most humbly beseech thee, and with thy Holy and Life-giving Spirit vouchsafe to bless and sanctify both us and these thy gifts of Bread and Wine, that they may be unto us the Body and Blood of thy Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ, to the end that we, receiving the same, may be strengthened and refreshed both in body and soul;

Who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took Bread; and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and gave it to his disciples, saying,

Take, eat, this is my Body which is given for you;
do this in remembrance of me.

Likewise after supper he took the Cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying,

Drink ye all of this;
for this is my Blood of the New Covenant,
which is shed for you and for many for the remission of sins;
Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.

Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy humble servants, having in remembrance the precious death and passion of thy dear Son, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, according to his holy institution, do celebrate, and set forth before thy Divine Majesty with these thy holy gifts, the memorial which he hath willed us to make, rendering unto thee most hearty thanks for the innumerable benefits which he hath procured unto us.

And we entirely desire thy fatherly goodness mercifully to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; most humbly beseeching thee to grant, that by the merits and death of thy Son Jesus Christ, and through faith in his blood, we and all thy whole Church may obtain remission of our sins, and all other benefits of his passion.

And here we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies, to be a reasonable, holy, and living sacrifice unto thee; humbly beseeching thee that all we, who are partakers of this holy Communion, may be fulfilled with thy grace and heavenly benediction.

And although we be unworthy, through our manifold sins, to offer unto thee any sacrifice, yet we beseech thee to accept this our bounden duty and service; not weighing our merits, but pardoning our offences; Through Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom, and with whom, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. Amen.

Let us pray: As our Saviour Christ hath commanded and taught us, we are bold to say:

Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name: Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread: And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation. But deliver us from evil.

O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world: have mercy upon us.
O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world: have mercy upon us.
O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world: grant us thy peace.

O Lord Jesu Christ, who saidst to thine Apostles, Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: regard not our sins but the faith of thy Church: and vouchsafe to grant her peace and unity according to thy will: Who livest and reignest God, throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.

Behold the Lamb of God, behold him that taketh away the sins of the world.

Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only and my soul shall be healed.

The response is said three times, all striking their breast.

My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the most Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there, and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

Anthem: O all ye people, clap your hands, John Smith
Ps 68, 33-34. Sing ye to the Lord, who ascended the heaven of heavens, to the sunrising, alleluia

O, all you people, clap your hands,
And with triumphant voices sing:
no force the mighty power withstands
of God, the universal King.

He shall opposing nations quell,
And with success our battles fight;
shall fix the pace where we must dwell,
the pride of Jacob, His delight.

God is gone up, our Lord and King,
with shouts of joy and trumpet’s sound;
to Him repeated praises sing,
and let this cheerful song go round.

The peace of God, which passeth all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord: and the blessing of God Almighty, X the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, be amongst you and remain with you always. Amen.

Let all the world in every corner sing,
"My God and King!"
The heavens are not too high,
His praise may thither fly;
the earth is not too low,
His praises there may grow.
Let all the world in every corner sing,
"My God and King!"

Let all the world in every corner sing,
"My God and King!"
The church with psalms must shout:
no door can keep them out.
But, above all, the heart
must bear the longest part.
Let all the world in every corner sing,
"My God and King!"

Having recited the Last Gospel (John 1, 1-14), the presider and ministers move to the Shrine of Our Lady for the Regina Cœli.

Regina Coeli

Joy to thee, O Queen of heaven, alleluia!
He whom thou was meet to bear, alleluia!
As he promised hath arisen, alleluia!
Pour for us to God thy prayer, alleluia!

Rejoice and be glad, O Virgin Mary, alleluia.
For the Lord has truly risen, alleluia.

Let us pray. O God,
Who gave joy to the world
through the resurrection of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ,
grant we pray, that with his mother, the Virgin Mary,
we may obtain the joys of everlasting life.
Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
