The 6th Sunday of Easter

May 17, 2020

Our churches are open again, even if for a small number of people and limited services. Here, a photo of the group meeting on Thursday for a devotional service and midday prayer.

Our readings, reflections and prayers remind us today that we are not orphaned and alone.

The familiar sound of the church bells ringing settles us into this Sunday morning

We welcome you to follow the service on this page by using the + and – signs to open and close the sections, or you may like to download the PDF of the service booklet at the link below.

Introductory Rites

Proclaim a joyful sound and let it be heard;
proclaim to the ends of the earth:
The Lord has freed his people, alleluia.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.

The Lord be with you.
And also with you.

Christ is risen, alleluia.
He is risen indeed, alleluia.

Dear friends,
this water will be sprinkled on us
as a memorial of our Baptism.
May the Lord our God help us by his grace
to remain faithful to the Spirit we have received.

I saw water flowing from the Temple,
from its right-hand side, alleluia:
and all to whom this water came
were saved and shall say: alleluia, alleluia.

May almighty God cleanse us of our sins,
and through the celebration of this Eucharist
make us worthy to share at the table of his Kingdom.
Amen.

Let us pray.

O God,
you have prepared for those who love you
joys beyond our understanding:
pour into our hearts such love for you,
that, loving you above all else,
we may obtain your promises
that exceed all we can desire;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Liturgy of the Word

℟.  Bless our God, you peoples; let the sound of his praise be heard.

7  O bless our God, you peoples;
and cause his praises to resound.
8  Who has held our souls in life,
who has not suffered our feet to slip. ℟.

9  For you have proved us, O God;
you have tried us as silver is tried.
10  You brought us into the net;
you laid sharp torment on our loins.
11  You let enemies ride over our heads;
we went through fire and water;
but you brought us out into a place of liberty. ℟.

12  I will come into your house with burnt-offerings:
and I will pay you my vows,
13 The vows that opened my lips:
that my mouth uttered when I was in trouble.
14  I will offer you burnt offerings of fattened beasts
with the sweet smoke of rams;
I will sacrifice a bull and the flesh of goats. ℟.

15  Come then and hear, all you that fear God,
and I will tell you what he has done for me.
16  I called out to him with my mouth,
and his praise was on my tongue.
17  If I had cherished wickedness in my heart,
the Lord would not have heard me; ℟.

18  But God has heard me;
he has heeded the voice of my prayer.
19  Praise be to God, who has not turned back my prayer,
or his steadfast love from me. ℟.

A reading from the first letter of Peter.

Who will harm you if you are eager to do what is good? But even if you do suffer for doing what is right, you are blessed. Do not fear what they fear, and do not be intimidated, but in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord. Always be ready to make your defence to anyone who demands from you an account of the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and reverence. Keep your conscience clear, so that, when you are maligned, those who abuse you for your good conduct in Christ may be put to shame. For it is better to suffer for doing good, if suffering should be God’s will, than to suffer for doing evil. For Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, in order to bring you to God. He was put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit, in which also he went and made a proclamation to the spirits in prison, who in former times did not obey, when God waited patiently in the days of Noah, during the building of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were saved through water. And baptism, which this prefigured, now saves you – not as a removal of dirt from the body, but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers made subject to him.

For the word of the Lord,
thanks be to God.

Anna reads from Acts; the singers bring Psalm 66; Stephanie reads from 1 Peter

The Lord be with you.
And also with you.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to John.
Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Jesus said: ‘If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you for ever. This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him.

You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you. I will not leave you orphaned; I am coming to you. In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me; because I live, you also will live. On that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. They who have my commandments and keep them are those who love me; and those who love me will be loved by my Father, and I will love them and reveal myself to them.’

For the Gospel of the Lord,
praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Gospel acclamation; Sr Juliana SI reads from the gospel of John

Sr Juliana SI gives us a reflection on the gospel reading

We bring our worries and our concerns for the people we care for and the world we inhabit.  Let us pray.

God of life and love,
in this liminal place
somewhere between disappointment and hope
worry and relief
searching and discovery
isolation and community
in this very place in which we find ourselves - you come among us
promising you will not leave us orphaned and alone.

As a society we stand on the cusp of entering - yet again - a new way of living and being.
New ways, new challenges, new hopes, lie before us.
Newness held together in a fragile tissue of unknowing what turning this corner may bring.

As we move on in uncertainty,
patient and hopeful,
we pray for those who lead and make decisions,
we pray for each member of our community and society who must act on or respond to the decisions which have been made.

May those who are merely inconvenienced
remember those whose lives are at stake.

May those who have no risk factors
remember those most vulnerable.

May those who have the on-going luxury of working from home
remember those who must choose between preserving their health or putting food on the table and a roof over their heads.

May those who have had to cancel holidays near and far
remember those who have no place to go.

May those who have lost in the tumult of economic markets
remember those who have nothing at all to lose.

May those for whom home is a safe haven
remember those for whom home is neither a haven nor safe.

May those with family nearby,
remember those who worry about family members far away.

Loving God who will not leave us orphaned and alone
Hear our prayer.

We remember those who ache to know they are loved and valued
Those who long for a compassionate understanding of their mental health issues
Those who are sick and those who care for them
Those who grieve.

Loving God who will not leave us orphaned and alone
Hear our prayer

God of life and love,
As we move on in uncertainty,
patient and hopeful,
we thank you for the mystery planted in us,
the paradox of life from death, and
community from scattered disciples.

Open our eyes to what is lasting
Help us to see what is worth holding on to, what is worth letting go
Help us to walk with you into the future which awaits us,
when the doors are again fully open and we are able to reshape the world once more.

We pray, as we live, through Jesus Christ, the Risen One

Amen.

Margaret brings us the prayers of the people

Greeting of Peace

We are the body of Christ.
God’s Spirit is with us.

The peace of the Lord be always with you.
And also with you.

We’re together online and also, although small in number, together in the church building again.

Liturgy of the Eucharist

God of glory,
accept all we offer you this day,
and bring us to that eternal city of love and light,
where Christ is King.
We ask this in his name. Amen.

The Lord be with you.
And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give him thanks and praise.

Worship and praise belong to you, Author of all being.
Your power sustains, your love restores, our broken world.
You are unceasingly at work,
from chaos bringing order
and filling emptiness with life.

Christ, raised from the dead,
proclaims the dawn of hope.
He lives in us that we may walk in light.

Your Spirit is fire in us,
your breath is power
to purge our sin
and warm our hearts to love.

As children of your redeeming purpose,
freed by him who burst from the tomb
and opened the gate of life,
we offer you our praise,
with angels and archangels
and the whole company of heaven,
singing the hymn of your unending glory:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.

Praise and thanksgiving be to you, Lord of all,
for by the Cross eternal life is ours
and death is swallowed up in victory.
In the first light of Easter
glory broke from the tomb
and changed the women's sorrow into joy.
From the Garden the mystery dawned
that he whom they had loved and lost
is with us now
in every place for ever.

Making himself known in the breaking of the bread,
speaking peace to the fearful disciples,
welcoming weary fishermen on the shore,
he renewed the promise of his presence
and of new birth in the Spirit
who sets the seal of freedom on your sons and daughters.

Before he was given up to suffering and death,
recalling the night of Israel's release,
the night in which slaves walked free,
at supper with his disciples
he took bread and offered you thanks.
He broke the bread,
and gave it to them, saying:
"Take, eat.
This is my Body: it is broken for you."

After supper, he took the cup,
he offered you thanks,
and gave it to them saying:
"Drink this, all of you.
This is my Blood of the new covenant;
it is poured out for you, and for all,
that sins may be forgiven.
Do this in remembrance of me."

We now obey your Son's command
We recall his blessed passion and death,
his glorious resurrection and ascension;
and we look for the coming of his Kingdom.
Made one with him, we offer you these gifts

and with them ourselves
a single, holy living sacrifice.

Hear us, most merciful Father,
and send your Holy Spirit upon us
and upon this bread and this wine,
that, overshadowed by his life-giving power,
they may be the Body and Blood of your Son,
and we may be kindled with the fire of your love
and renewed for the service of your Kingdom.

Help us, who are baptised into the fellowship of Christ's Body
to live and work to your praise and glory;
may we grow together in unity and love
until at last, in your new creation,
we enter into our heritage
in the company of the Virgin Mary,
the apostles, and prophets,
and of all our brothers and sisters
living and departed.

Through Jesus Christ our Lord,
with whom, and in whom,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
all honour and glory be to you,
Lord of all ages,
world without end.
Amen.

Communion Rite

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.
We who are many are one body,

for we all share in the one bread.

Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, grant us peace.

Behold the Lamb of God,
behold him who takes away the sins of the world.
Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.

Lord, I am not worthy to receive you,
but only say the word, and I shall be healed.

My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the most Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there, and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

Father,
you restored us to life
by raising your Son from death.
May we who receive this sacrament
always be strengthened to do your will,
in the name of Jesus Christ the risen Lord. Amen.

Love divine, all loves excelling,
joy of heaven, to earth come down,
fix in us thy humble dwelling,
all thy faithful mercies crown.
Jesus, thou art all compassion,
pure, unbounded love thou art;
visit us with thy salvation,
enter every trembling heart.

Come, almighty to deliver,
let us all thy life receive;
suddenly return, and never,
never more thy temples leave.
Thee we would be always blessing,
serve thee as thy hosts above,
pray, and praise thee without ceasing,
glory in thy perfect love.

Finish then thy new creation;
pure and spotless let us be;
let us see thy great salvation,
perfectly restored in thee:
Changed from glory into glory
till in heaven we take our place,
till we cast our crowns before thee
lost in wonder, love, and praise!

Concluding Rites

Blessing and Dismissal

The God of peace,
who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus,
the great shepherd of the sheep,
through the blood of the everlasting covenant,
make you perfect in every good work to do his will,
working in you what is pleasing in his sight;
and the blessing of God almighty,
the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,
be among you and remain with you always. Amen.

Sr Juliana SI gives us the blessing

Go in peace to love and serve the Lord.
In the name of Christ. Amen.

At the shrine of Our Lady

Regina Coeli

Joy to thee, O Queen of heaven, alleluia!
He whom thou was meet to bear, alleluia!
As he promised hath arisen, alleluia!
Pour for us to God thy prayer, alleluia!

Rejoice and be glad, O Virgin Mary, alleluia.
For the Lord has truly risen, alleluia.

Let us pray. O God,
Who gave joy to the world
through the resurrection of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ,
grant we pray, that with his mother, the Virgin Mary,
we may obtain the joys of everlasting life.
Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

Thanks to all the people who lend their voices and photos to enliven our online community. Let’s share morning tea this morning with a reminder of all the faces we’ve seen online over the past weeks, not forgetting that we are still in the Easter Season so some chocolate indulgence is called for.

And a special greeting today to Anna who celebrated a birthday recently.
